For the last twenty years, new composite materials have appeared and enabled some boomerang lovers to design new types of items, much more effective and much stronger. 

Ultra-stiff and very thin materials, like carbon fibre, make it possible to reach outstanding performance as in long distance events, whose world record is over 200 yards, and the Aussie round event.

These materials do not require enormous physical strength and are suitable for all.

Now let's make a list of all the most commonly used composite materials to produce boomerangs :

  - Bakelite (phenolic resin)

To be more precise, the correct term is actually paxolin (layers of dark-coloured paper bonded with phenolic resin), an electrical insulator which is very stiff. It is available in various thicknesses and it is used for making Aussie round boomerangs, trick catch boomerangs and MTA boomerangs. Despite being slightly breakable, this great material is not very expensive and can produce very good boomerangs.

- Fibreglass

Coming as sheets of various thicknesses, this very dense material is perfect for the Aussie round event and the long distance event. It is made of fabrics or fibres mixed with epoxy resin and then hardened. Because of harmful dust particles, working this type of material requires a specific equipment. The ideal thickness is about 2 mm.

- Carbon fibre

Carbon fibre has revolutionized the world of boomerangs over the past few years. What was before only used by the industry is now popular and available to everyone. Even stiffer than fibreglass, this material is almost unbreakable and very beautiful design-wise.

Like fibreglass, carbon fibre comes as sheets of various thicknesses.

Watch out ! Be aware that you will need a jigsaw with a tungsten carbide blade to cut this type of material ; it is indeed an incredibly stiff material !

Before working all these composite materials, you will have to put on the appropriate work attire as well as a high-performance filter respirator to prevent breathing in harmful dust particles while cutting and sanding with an electrical file.
