You want to build your own boomerang and this is normal.

By building your own boomerang you’ll understand how it flies, the importance of the shape, you’ll understand what a dihedral or anhedral angle is .

Here you will find a variety of different materials which can’t be found in retail sale and that will help you design your own boomerangs.

Building your own boomerang is a great experience. Most competitors build their own boomerangs for the sole purpose to customize it to their throwing gesture. This is not a matter of aesthetics but all throwers want tailored boomerangs.

Do you know that the high level bowl pétanque players have tailored balls adapted to their hands?

It is the same for the boomerang.

Boomerang is one of the only sports where you build and throw your own object, it’s almost unique. The javelin thrower does not build his/her javelin.

There are various interesting materials to design a boomerang:

-Wood is the most common material and this is the first that comes to mind.

Finnish birch plywood is the best, there are different qualities.

-Plastic materials like polypropylene and ABS less easy to machine but we will give you ideas to help you.

-Bakelite, former electrical insulator, is very interesting for its stiffness, it is widely used for  MTA or AussieRound.

Composite materials, such as fibreglass and carbon are more expensive but are particularly effective for the distance test and Aussie Round test

For composite materials you have to be particularly well equipped to machine them, for example you have to use a jigsaw with a tungsten carbide blade.
Each material has its own qualities and characteristics (density, strength, thickness ...).

The woodis ideal for leisure boomerangs , only passionate people will opt formore sophisticated materials.
